JANUARY  HIGHLIGHTS

On January 2nd,  The Steve Hunter family was here to entertain us like only they can.  Love songs, oldies, rock and more could be heard.  Our residents sang along and kept the beat by clapping their hands and tapping their toes.  All those in the audience were smiling from ear to ear.

January 2nd,  Jimmy Fletcher treated our residents to some ole fashioned country sing-a-longs.  This was the day for music and not one complaint was heard.  The residents were thrilled to have dual entertainers on this day.

January 4th our friend, Terry Smith brought his guitar and his songs and serenaded the residents  in the evening.  Some of our residents recall Terry from his days with the McNett band. All of them look forward to the first Monday of each month as they know this is the night he will be here and they know it’s their chance to sing a long and have a grand ole time.

January 7th, the Zion Pre Schoolers were here for SHOW AND TELL.  Each child brought their favorite toy, telling the residents why the toy was so special to them.  Afterwards the children took a tour of our dietary department and left in great amazement over our GIANT freezer.  Thereafter, the children along with our residents made home made ice cream in zip lock bags.  What fun it was to watch young and old alike…shaking their individual servings of ice cream mixture until it became a much needed tasty treat.

January 15th, Jim Weis was once again among us.  His renditions of songs from long ago always bring forth  memories and a smile. The residents anticipate what song will come next.  It’s always a singing ole time when Jim is in the house.

January 15th was CRAZY HAT DAY…..what fun it was to see the residents and staff “sporting” some very creative attire on their heads.  The residents had a good time just watching the crazy hats pass by.

January 26th was the Birthday and Anniversary celebrations….all those celebrating received flowers.  And this time, unlike the others, there was a special entertainer to sing personalized songs to those having the birthdays and anniversaries.  What a celebration is was…good food, good music and good times.  Who could ask for anything more.

Text Box: PRESIDENTS’ DAY HISTORY February 15, 2010 Presidents’ Day dates back to our founding father and first President, George Washington. Washington was born on February 22, 1732. On his birthday in 1796, when Washington was in his last year as President, the day became the holiday known as Washington’s Birthday. However, Americans didn’t observe this holiday until 1832, 100 years after his birth. Abraham Lincoln was the next President to gain reverence similar to Washington. Born on February 12, 1809, Lincoln’s birthday was first celebrated in 1866, the year after he was assassinated. Although his birthday was not honored as a federal holiday like Washington’s, many states adopted it as a legal holiday. In 1968, Congress passed legislation placing any federal holiday on a Monday. In 1971, President Richard Nixon combined Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays into Presidents’ Day to be celebrated on the third Monday in February, regardless of which day it fell on.
