February Calendar of Events - Watsontown Facility

      SPECIAL DATES IN FEBRUARY

February 2     Ground Hog Day.  There will be Ground Hogs everywhere in our facility.  In fact,  we are going to have a Ground Hog Hunt before lunch.  The resident finding the most Ground Hogs will receive a Free Order In Certificate, in addition, second and third places will receive ribbons.  No nook or crevice will be safe….the Ground Hogs will take over….beware…they are everywhere.

February 5     Today is our version of football’s SUPER BOWL.  We will have FOOTBALL FRENZY.  Residents will participate in the END ZONE TOSS, answer FOOTBALL TRIVIA and enjoy SUPER BOWL  type snacks.  Residents and staff alike will be encouraged to wear their favorite team’s jersey or even a complete football uniform. Lots of fun to be had on this day.

February 10   We will once again have the Therapy Dogs here at the facility.  The dogs will be going room to room…shaking hands, fetching papers, and hopping on laps of residents.  The Therapy Dogs light up the days of our residents.  The smiles on the residents faces speak volumes of the joy the dogs bring to them.  The dogs are usually ready for a nap after visiting each resident on both levels.

February 14   Today is our Valentine’s Day Party.  The King and Queen will be crowned. Special snacks will be served for the sweethearts in our facility.  A day of love, remembrance and fun.  You won’t want to miss it.  There will also be cookies for guests in the lobby

February 16   FAT TUESDAY.  The residents will awaken their senses when making home made donuts in the activity room.  The aroma, the taste, the art of making donuts, who could ask for anything more??

February 23   Will be our ANNUAL Mardi Gras Parade and celebration.  We hope to outshine last years parade by a landslide.  The residents will make and personalize floats that will be attached to their wheelchairs.  They will have noise makers and parade around the inside of our facility…heading to the dining room where beads and more will be exchanged.  Come join the fun … you won’t be disappointed.

      VALENTINE CARDS

The practice of sending paper valentines, usually in the shape of a heart with a drawing of Cupid and verse, may date to 1415 and the imprisoned Duke of Orleans who was said to have sent romantic verses to his wife on Valentine’s Day.  By the late 19th century, valentines had become elaborate, and gifts were given.  The practice of giving cards decreased in the early 20th century when the first plain-looking, mass produced Valentine’s Day cards proved unsatisfactory to the public.  With more sophisticated printing techniques, giving cards picked up after WW I.

      GROUNDHOG’S DAY

February 2, stems from the ancient belief that hibernation creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence.  The Pennsylvania Dutch brought this tradition to America.  If the groundhog sees his shadow, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole.  If the day is cloudy, and shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.
